- E-mail is a private communication between two parties who have an account on the internet.
- It is an electronic message sent from one computer to another.
- Email stands for Electronic mail. Email messages are conveyed through email servers, which use multiple protocols within the TCP/IP suite
- For example – SMTP (Simple mail transfer protocol) is a protocol used to send messages whereas other protocols IMAP or POP are used to retrieve messages from a mail server.
IMAP: Internet message access protocol.
POP: Post office protocol.
Structure of E-mail Message
E-mails consist of two main parts
1. Header
2. Body of Message
1. Header: The Header contains the name and address of the recipient.
2. Body: The body contains the message itself.
E-mail Address
- To send and receive mail, one needs to have an E-mail address.
- E-mail addresses consist of two parts
1. User Name: It is the name of a person‘s account, which can be an actual name or any name.
2. Domain Name: It is the location of the person‘s account on the internet separated by a period and then type of organization mentioned.
Example:- User Name @ Domain Name
These two parts are separated by at the rate @ symbol.
Advantages of E-mail
- The cost of sending an electronic message is nominal.
- The messages are sent and received instantly.
- We can attach Pictures, Videos, and Sounds to our email and send them to anyone.
- We can read, Print, Forward, Reply, or delete the received message.
Disadvantages of E-mail
- Responding through an email takes more time than other message services like WhatsApp etc.
- Compared to other forms of communication, emails are less personal
For Example:- when you talk to anyone over the phone or meeting face to face is more appropriate for communicating than email.
